Hello Grade 5 Families,

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. The students were excited to participate in the run and demonstrated excellent leadership while supporting their Grade 2 buddies. We are very proud of the enthusiasm, kindness, and teamwork they showed throughout the event.

Math

This week, students reviewed and strengthened their understanding of place value. They practiced reading numbers, writing numbers in expanded form, and building numbers using place value discs.

You can support your child’s learning at home by encouraging them to read numbers, write them in expanded form, and represent them using drawings to show the value of each digit. In grade 5, students are required to understand numbers up to 10 000 000 and 0.001.

For example:

2 546 242 . 452 = 2 000 000 + 500 000 + 40 000 + 6 000 + 200 + 40 + 2 + 0.4 + 0.05 + 0.002, which is written as, two million, five hundred forty six thousand two hundred forty two AND four hundred fifty two thousandths.

Up to hundreths will be grade 4 review and thousandths will be new to grade 5.

Students are encouraged to practice their basic facts regularly at home. While we set aside a small amount of time each week for practice, much of the Grade 5 math curriculum involves solving multi-step problems and calculations that require basic facts to be automatic.

At home, students can practice using dice, cards, or dominoes to play simple math fact games. Simple worksheets can also be found here: Math Drills. There is no need to print them; students are welcome to copy the questions onto any sheet of paper and complete them by hand.

Literacy

For writing, students practiced planning and organizing thoughtful writing about Terry Fox. Be sure to check out their wonderful visual journal pages! Students are looking forward to sharing their work with you next week during Meet the Teacher Night.

As a class, we are also reviewing suffixes and how they change the context / meaning of the root word. If you waould like to support your child at home, have them add on suffixes (letter endings) for spelling practice. For example,

            - mud / muddy

            - fog / foggy

            - fly / flying

            - hike / hiking

As we get into our literacy stations and guided reading routines, everyone practiced independent reading and buddy reading while paying close attention to fluency (expression, volume, intonation, and speed). 

Wellness

We are excited to announce a 3-day, in-class program offered by Tim Hortons Foundation Camps for all grade 5s. Here is a short introduction to the program to support our Wellness (Health) curriculum. The dates are Sept 22 - 24 next week.
